Video review and unboxing

Design, construction and equipment

To begin with, I want to say about the varieties of this tablet. In total, there are three configurations of the device - the basic one (the tablet itself with Intel Core i3, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB SSD and Intel HD 3000 graphics), which comes with only a leather case; basic extended, where a docking station and a keyboard are added to everything else; maximum with the same case, dock and keyboard, but with a more powerful filling of the tablet itself (Core i5, 128 GB SSD, Intel HD 4000). The cost of the youngest configuration is 24,990 rubles, the average is 27,990, but the top one will cost 34,990. We got the basic extended configuration for the test, and now we'll talk about it.

The tablet comes in a huge stylish box. Inside, everything is neatly arranged into compartments. In the largest one there is a case, under it there is a tablet, and already under it there are various documentation and instructions, as well as disks with drivers and for system recovery. It is curious that standard means on the tablet cannot perform a complete data reset and for this it is necessary to connect a CD drive in order to allow the device to load the initial system image from the disk. What prevented it from being written to a USB flash drive is not clear, but the fact that it would be much more convenient is an unequivocal fact. Among other things, in the box you can find a power adapter and an adapter from microHDMI to VGA. Perhaps this accessory will be useful to someone.

To be honest, I have no idea how the box of the extended and maximum configuration of the tablet looks like, since I got the docking station and keyboard in a separate bag. Speaking of docking stations. First, it is not simple, but composite. By attaching the stand in one way or another, you can turn the tablet into a replacement for a desktop PC or monoblock, or into some kind of interactive magazine. Secondly, it increases the number of USB 3.0 ports available to you from one to four, which will allow you to connect a lot of different gadgets to your computer, including a keyboard and mouse, if you suddenly don’t like the wireless keyboard from Acer.

But let's move on to the tablet itself. It is worth noting that it is quite bulky and heavy, which is not surprising with a screen size of 11.6” and a metal case. The display resolution is 1920x1080 pixels, which personally seems to me the best option for devices with such a diagonal. Unaccustomed to the elements and fonts of the standard Windows desktop may seem very small, but this can be easily corrected by increasing the scale or size of the fonts. The touch interface looks normal and is very pleasing to the eye.

On the front side of the device, in addition to the screen, you can see a 1.3-megapixel camera and an ambient light sensor. In the upper left corner there is a list of the main advantages of the tablet, under the screen there is a single physical Windows button, and the lower right corner is given over to the Acer logo, hollowed out in metal. At the top end there is a slider to turn off the auto-rotation of the image and two cooling grilles. Yes, yes, the tablet is equipped with full-fledged coolers, after all, there is quite an adult computer hardware here.

The bottom end is equipped with stylish stereo speakers and a microphone. On the right side of the device, you can find USB 3.0 ports, micro HDMI and a hole for the charger. The inscriptions Dolby Home Theater and Professionally Tuned tell us about the professional tuning of the device and its good musical capabilities. The sound from the stereo speakers is very good. On the left side are the power button, volume keys, 3.5 mm headphone jack, model barcode and the Iconia inscription, which tells us that the gadget belongs to the Acer tablet line. The back side of the device is equipped with a 5-megapixel camera with an additional microphone.

There are absolutely no complaints about the assembly of the tablet, since there is one solid monolithic structure. The device is pleasant to hold in hands, but the considerable weight makes it problematic to use the W700 outside the apartment. Personally, I see the main use case for using a tablet with a docking station and a keyboard as the main PC (hardware allows it), with the ability to move to a cozy warm bed for watching movies, gaming, surfing the Web and social networks. Well, I would like to separately note the design of this set of tablet and accessories - as for me, it is simply gorgeous. A sort of futuristic high-tech minimalism for your workplace.

Software

The tablet runs a full 64-bit version of Windows 8 (or Windows 8 Pro in the maximum configuration), which means that we have an adult working system that is familiar to everyone on desktop computers and laptops. The main feature of Windows 8 is full support for touch input thanks to an interface optimized for finger control. Actually, it is about its functionality that I want to talk about in this review, while I see no need to describe the familiar interface and capabilities of Windows.

Before us is familiar from Windows Phone and has already become familiar tiled interface with live tiles that display various relevant information. Thanks to them, the screen looks lively and bright, besides, all the main elements are at hand. By default, the tile ribbon is divided into several categories: standard system programs, Acer applications, which contain programs preinstalled by the company, as well as those installed by you. A list of all installed programs on this tablet computer can be called up by swiping from the bottom edge of the screen to the top and clicking a special icon. All of them can be pinned to the main screen. When there are no programs hanging in the background, this panel can be called up with the opposite gesture. With it, you can close background applications or pin them to one side of the screen. A back and forth gesture from the left edge of the screen will bring up a panel of all recent running and background programs. With its appearance, it resembles Android, but the programs are not closed by swiping, and, I must say, in vain.

A swipe from the right edge of the screen brings up a panel where the icons for search, sharing, Start, Devices and Settings are located. Depending on the place of the call (application store or some kind of program), the panel may display various additional information. In addition to the panel, a clock also appears on the display showing the time, date, day of the week, amount of charge and Wi-Fi connection activity.

In the settings, you can make quick settings, such as connecting to Wi-Fi or adjusting the brightness, read help, or go to more detailed computer settings.

The Personalization item allows you to select pictures for the lock screen, customize the color scheme and background image of the home screen, and make or choose an avatar for your account. In addition, you can immediately select the desired applications for the lock screen.

In the Users settings, you can log in with your Windows Live account, change your password or set a pattern with a pin code, and add or change a device user.

In Notifications, you can turn on or off certain notifications of the system and specifically for each application. Personally, this item reminded me of similar settings in iOS.

The Search settings offer to turn on the log for frequently used queries and select applications with which or in which the tablet can be searched for the necessary data.

The sharing options are quite typical for this kind of setup.

The General heading hides the time settings, application switching, touch keyboard, spelling, screen auto-brightness, and language. You can also see the available amount of free internal memory for data storage, as well as various options for restoring factory settings. You can make an easy reset without deleting data, but you won’t be able to do a hard-rezzet without a proprietary disk with software, although I would very much like to. Personally, I have long dreamed of the possibility of rolling back to the factory state on desktop Windows without any disks and system images, but the way it is implemented in mobile operating systems. Sometimes this can come in very handy. Well, I can’t help but complain once again that it would be wiser to place the system files on a flash drive, and not on a disk, so that you don’t have to buy a drive separately to connect to the tablet, in which case you can use this opportunity.

There is nothing particularly interesting in Confidentiality, and the cat cried too many settings.

The Devices item allows you to add certain devices to the memory of your tablet, be it a printer, a full-size laptop, and so on.

In Wireless, airplane mode, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth are enabled.

Accessibility features are designed for people with certain disabilities. Here you can turn on the contrast mode of the screen, increase the elements, Narrator, magnifier, also adjust the display of notifications and the thickness of the cursor.

Synchronization settings allows you to choose exactly what you want to sync and how. Homegroup settings and Windows Update speak for themselves. It is worth noting that some programs may require updating from under the normal system interface.

Consider the pre-installed applications and the main programs of the touch interface of the system. Mail is a branded email client with the ability to connect multiple accounts, but you need to add them from the Options, and not from the mail settings.

Contacts contains all your friends and acquaintances, as well as your and their social activity. You can link the application to Facebook, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, Hotmail, Outlook, and Microsoft itself. Able to show only those contacts that are currently online and available for communication. Adding new people is simple and straightforward. You can also read your social feeds here.

The Desktop tile allows you to go to your usual desktop and do serious business without any multi-colored disgrace.

In Messages, you can see your chat history, connect accounts and invite someone to this chat. When you click Invite, Internet Explorer opens with a Microsoft page and asks you to enter the email of the person you want to invite to this messenger.

There is nothing particularly interesting in the Calendar. View events by day, week or month.

Photos display all the images stored in the device's memory. You can connect a camera or other device to your tablet and import photos from it directly to your tablet. Also, this program allows you to view images from your accounts in a tile-style slideshow display.

Beautiful and visual, the Bing Weather app is a great example of what programs should look like on Windows 8 touch and similar devices. There is a display of the weather around the world and selected places, various graphics and a forecast for several days.

Internet Explorer is the standard browser for browsing the Internet. Minimum functionality, looks simple and works quite well.

Bing Maps, aka Nokia Maps. Quite detailed and convenient, for simple navigation will be more than sufficient. Of the functions - routes and traffic jams, there is a satellite view. Fonts on the Full HD screen of the tablet do not look very clear.

News allows you to choose the sources you are interested in and read them. There is a choice between domestic portals and global ones.

The App Store contains all the programs adapted for the touch interface. The games here are still the simplest and there are few of them, but with the programs things are a little better. There are many categories, so you can find something to your liking.

SkyDrive is cloud storage for your Windows devices, including tablets and smartphones. Allows you to synchronize photos, documents and other files between them.

There is also a Bing search here, displaying various pretty pictures and a search bar.

In the Games section, you can find both games for Windows and games for the Xbox 360, but, of course, you cannot play them without a miracle box. But you can watch game trailers. To download something from here, you need to click search for games in the app store, see the Xbox game feeds, select your favorite, click "Play", then see a notification that links of this type do not open automatically without the Xbox Live App program, and only then click "Get from the store". Of course, if you install this very Xbox Live App, then the procedure will be somewhat simplified, but finding this program is not at all easy. It didn't work out for me. Intuitive system, you will not say anything.

Music & Video displays all your songs, movies and clips. The system-style interface looks a little nicer than on Windows Phone, but it's surprising that with a 1080p screen, some words could not be beautifully transferred to the submenu. Apparently, this is a common disease of all eighth Windows. The same dance is observed on the mobile system. As for the functionality, it is the most basic here, but it allows you to broadcast video on the Xbox.

The Sports Bing tile displays major sports news from around the world. An interesting and enjoyable program for sports lovers.

Bing Travel shows you the most beautiful places around the world, finds flights and hotels, and shows you 3D panoramas of cities around the world.

Acer also pre-installed a few of its apps, as well as those it saw fit.

Acer Explorer is an interactive explorer that allows you to install recommended programs, go to the company's website and get manufacturer support, and learn more about the features of your device thanks to Acer tutorials, which for some reason are not yet there.

In the newsXpresso news catalog, you can choose the topics you are interested in and read the news in a convenient tiled format.

The Kindle e-book store needs no introduction.

There is an adapted version of Skype. On first launch, it will prompt you to merge your account with your Windows Live account. Perhaps it will please you with a minimalistic interface and a minimum of settings.

TuneIn is a convenient and advanced Internet radio with a huge number of both local and foreign radio stations. Looks great, basic functionality. The versions for iOS or Android are far away, but outwardly I like them much more.

Skitch allows you to create various graphic notes, sketches and synchronize them with Evernote.

ivi.ru is a popular online cinema, but there are not very many films here, and the assortment is not the most interesting.

Weather Bug is a cute and functional weather app.

A few simple toys are preinstalled: Microsoft MiniSweeper, Treasures Of Montesuma as a demo that doesn't run full screen, and Gameloft's Shark Dash, which slows down a bit. In addition to them, there is the most popular Cut The Rope, Wordament, where you need to find various words, and Microsoft Mahjong.

The proprietary cloud service Acer Cloud has not gone anywhere, which, however, does not work in the tiled interface and throws it into the usual one. Of course, not without Microsoft Office, which must be activated or downloaded for trial, and McAfee Internet Security also falls into normal windowed mode.

Social Jogger is a kind of aggregator of your social activity in various networks. To be honest, I don’t see the need for it, since the system itself aggregates everything very well anyway.

Acer Crystal Eye lets you apply various effects to your tablet's webcam and take a variety of fun photos.

When you touch the screen with the whole five, the Ring, familiar to us from Android tablets, is activated, which allows you to perform certain operations and settings.

Camera

The tablet has a 5-megapixel module that allows you to take medium-quality photos and about the same quality in video at a maximum resolution of 1944p. To be honest, this is the first time I see such resolutions for videos in tablets and mobile devices. I don’t know who would think of shooting in this quality on a tablet that is not the lightest and most compact, but apparently there are such people, since the company has added such an opportunity. The camera interface is simple, the functionality is the most basic. You can find examples of photos below, but our sample did not work with the video - strong sound distortion, accelerated display of frames, lags. Most likely, this is a bug of a particular instance of the device, or rather, its software.

Performance and user experience

As I said, I got the simplest tablet configuration for testing with a 1.4 GHz dual-core Core i3 processor, 4 GB of RAM, Intel HD 3000 graphics and 64 GB of SSD storage. Memory, as for me, is not enough, since it was enough for me only for two more or less modern computer games, several programs and simpler games. In addition, out of 64 GB, only 59 GB are available, some of which are occupied by the system, as well as numerous pre-installed software. As for the power of iron, I decided not to give a huge number of computer benchmarks here, but to limit myself to the results of the Windows performance test. They are quite clear and revealing, besides, each of you can compare the results with your laptop or Windows computer to evaluate the approximate performance of the tablet without any serious effort.

For comparison, here are the results of my Asus Zenbook Prime UX21A ultrabook with a Core i7 processor, 256 GB SSD, Intel HD 4000 graphics, 4 GB of RAM and Windows 7 Pro. It is worth noting that the maximum configuration of the tablet, which has more powerful hardware, will naturally show better results.

In terms of gaming performance, I have tested several popular titles from the app store, as well as full-fledged PC video games - Diablo 3 and Mass Effect 3. With Fruit Ninja, Reckless Racing Ultimate and the incredibly high-quality and interesting ADERA game for free, no problems arose. , but with serious toys I had to tinker a little. The Diablo 3 installer worked only after enabling Windows 7 compatibility mode, and Mass Effect 3 also had to be entered into compatibility mode after installation, because otherwise the game complained about incompatibility with the computer configuration and closed. In addition, the installation of the game through Origin was overshadowed by the fact that the download was constantly interrupted, as soon as the screen went out, and in the system settings I did not find how to make it not turn off. It is worth noting that both games allow you to run themselves in the tablet's native Full HD resolution, but in the case of the basic configuration of the Acer W700, I would recommend reducing the resolution in games to 1600x900 or lower in order to less load the Intel HD 3000, which is not the most productive graphics. Alas. , at lower resolutions it is possible to start not in full screen, so you should first tinker in the settings and choose the optimal ones. In the maximum configuration of the device, it will already be possible to allow yourself to roam a little and set the highest resolution, and set the graphics settings to high-highest, instead of medium-high on the basic configuration. In general, you can play Mass Effect 3 or Diablo 3, but you can’t play the first game without a keyboard and mouse, so it makes sense to take an extended configuration with a docking station and a keyboard, but you can deal with the second one anyway . In general, if you want maximum performance and comfortable gaming in more or less modern desktop toys, then take the maximum version of the tablet and enjoy.

While playing games and working with programs, the tablet is quite noisy, however, during everyday use, the operation of the fans does not bother at all, and the case does not heat up much. As for autonomy, the manufacturer promises up to 8 hours on a single charge. In HD-video viewing mode, the tablet will last about 4-5 hours, in everyday use you can count on these same 8 hours, depending on the load. Nothing prevents you from planting a tablet and in a couple of hours, there would be a desire, as they say.

There are no special complaints about the operation of the device. The tablet works stably, performs its functions properly. Personally, I was a little annoyed by not the fastest wake-up of the device after pressing the power button to unlock the screen, but I think this issue can be fixed with various updates. The disadvantages include perhaps not the smallest weight, but the easily soiled screen, which every now and then got very dirty with me.

conclusions

By and large, we are more likely to have a personal computer than a tablet. The gadget can perfectly replace both a laptop and not the most powerful PC, which is long overdue to be replaced with something newer. Naturally, the maximum configuration of the device will allow you to use it more actively and experience less constraint in actions, whether it is running games or storing media files. In addition, the presence of a chic docking station, a comfortable keyboard and a high-quality stylish cover will make using the tablet more enjoyable and varied. To everyone who wants to get the maximum stuffing from a more or less mobile tablet, I would recommend the top-end configuration, which is not so expensive compared to competitors' offers.

For example, Samsung sells Smart PC Pro in a plastic case without a docking station with a keyboard for 10 thousand more (15 if you count with the keyboard). The presence of the S-Pen in the Samsung tablet does not look like such a serious advantage against the background of the Acer W700, which can boast a more interesting design, better case materials and a chic package bundle. Well, for not the most demanding users looking for just a good tablet based on Windows 8, it is undoubtedly worth taking a closer look at the junior configuration of the device that you just had the honor to meet.

Acer Iconia W700 tablet review

Until Windows 8 hardware companies find out what users expect from a modern mobile PC, they will continue to release various devices in order to find the optimal set of qualities and characteristics for their products. But already now we can safely say that hybrid tablets-laptops are very popular. In the AV market, models with a weak Atom processor and quite strong devices with a Core i5 CPU have already been released, the characteristics of which are not inferior to powerful laptops. Therefore, at the moment, most users are forced to make a choice between the high performance of the tablet and its battery life.

Once we have already considered with a removable keyboard, and now we have to test the W700, the cost of which reaches 24,000 rubles. The Acer Iconia W700 is an 11 inch tablet that is essentially an ultrabook without a keyboard. Some may think that the W700 is just a smaller copy of the W510, but they will be wrong. Unlike the W510, the new Acer doesn't have a detachable keyboard or docking station to charge the tablet, but it does come with a modular stand that allows you to support your tablet in both landscape and portrait orientations. Let's test the Acer Iconia W700 and see how the lack of a detachable keyboard and docking station affects and what the Core i5 processor costs.

Design

To be honest, we don't even know where to start, because the W700 is a tablet/laptop hybrid. First of all, you need to evaluate the convenience of the device when using it as an 11-inch tablet. The Iconia W700 looks solid enough thanks to its one-piece aluminum body. But, at the same time, the tablet is too bulky: it weighs 2.09 pounds and has a body thickness of 0.47 inches. Basically, these parameters are due to the presence of a full-size USB 3.0 port, the thickness of which would in no way allow developers to create an ultra-thin case. The tablet also has a micro HDMI port, headphone jack, volume rocker, power button, screen orientation lock and two speakers. In addition, the package includes an HDMI to VGA adapter in case the user wants to connect a projector to the device.

The developers also took into account the presence of a processor in the Core i5 tablet, which is typical for powerful laptops, and added two deep vents along the edges of the case. Of course, under these conditions, all other non-ventilated Atom CPU tablets will be significantly thinner and lighter than the Acer Iconia W700. Note that even some i5 tablets, including those with the same thickness, are lighter than the W700.

But who cares about a couple of extra grams when the tablet has high specifications. At first glance, the W700 is very good. In addition, it has a very convenient stand that will support the tablet in landscape or portrait orientation. Unfortunately, the cradle will not be able to charge your device, but it has three USB 3.0. ports, which will come in handy if you want to connect a mouse, a dongle or some other accessory. In this case, you will not be able to remove the connected device, since two more ports will remain in stock. In addition, the stand has another USB plug that connects directly to the tablet itself. Because of this, the tablet is very stable and will require force to remove it from the stand.

In addition, the back panel of the stand is removable, which allows you to change its position in accordance with the desired orientation of the tablet. Unfortunately, the process of installing the device on a stand and changing its orientation is rather incomprehensible, although it is described in the instructions. For the experiment, we asked several people to change the orientation of the tablet, located on the stand. And all of them experienced difficulties before reaching the desired result. In addition, the stand itself is very thick and has sharp edges that can easily scratch some fragile things in your bag. But, by and large, the stand is not so important, unlike the characteristics of the tablet itself.

But, nevertheless, when buying an Acer Iconia W700, it is worth considering all the components that you have to constantly carry with you in order to enjoy the versatility of the tablet. We have already mentioned the stand and the device itself. You'll also need the included case and wireless keyboard and mouse if you want to fully use the W700 as a laptop. Also, do not forget about the adapter. As a result, instead of a keyboard dock, you will have to carry at least seven removable accessories with you, each of which takes up a lot of space. If Acer followed the already trodden path and released its tablet with a docking station, then we would get a very convenient device that includes a keyboard, recharging, a stand, several ports, and the only drawback would be the inability to place the tablet in portrait orientation.

Keyboard

The Acer Iconia W700 comes with a Bluetooth keyboard. It is she who is built into the docking station of the previous W510 model. The design of the keyboard is made in metallic silver color with white buttons. However, compared to the W510, the W700's keyboard buttons are more prominent and larger, and typing won't take long. In addition, the keyboard has an activation mode switch, which eliminates the need to hold the button to turn on the device.

It's unfortunate that Acer abandoned the docking station idea in favor of a separate mobile stand that needs to be reassembled each time. The previous model's docking station was a little cramped, but we're sure Acer could find a way out. We hope that they will do so by the time the next model of this line is released.

It's worth adding that it would have been nice to include a mouse, as neither the docking station nor the standalone keyboard from Acer have a touchpad that could replace a pointing device (many other manufacturers have already equipped their docking stations with similar pads). We're sure most users would ditch the case that came with their tablet in favor of a small mouse. Why build a tablet with 1080 pixels resolution and the ability to mount it vertically if it doesn't even come with a mouse? With this screen resolution, it is quite difficult to manage the tablet desktop. We used the Logitech Rechargeable Trackpad to control the menus, but most users will most likely have to run to the nearest store and buy some kind of manipulator to control the Windows 8 menu bars. Of course, if you are willing to spend another 1500 rubles for your convenience, then such a question will not bother you.

Display

The Acer Aspire S7 ultrabook is already on our list of favorite displays, so it's no surprise to see a high-quality monitor on the W700. It's still the same IPS 1080p screen with Gorilla Glass, although the 11-inch display looks even more amazing than the 13-inch ultrabook. Image quality is noticeable both in desktop mode using the stand, and when viewing photos or tablet menus. Even at a maximum brightness of 350 nits, we had no problems with the monitor. The screen has wide viewing angles, and it's a pity that the tablet stand does not allow you to adjust the viewing angle. This feature would come in handy for watching movies. At maximum brightness settings, you can notice screen glare, but they are so slight that they will not be able to distract you from work.

Camera

From our past reviews, you probably already understood that we are not fans of cameras on tablets. But to our surprise, the W700 was able to take some really decent shots. The tablet's 5-megapixel camera has autofocus and fast response. Even compared to the Samsung ATIV Smart PC we reviewed just recently, the W700's camera response times are significantly faster. And the quality of the photos themselves could pleasantly surprise. The camera renders colors realistically and we were even able to take some good shots despite the strong lighting. Most other tablet cameras would produce exceptionally blown out shots in situations like this. We posted a frame with a photo of the sky for viewing, because it shows that the camera was able to preserve the natural blue of the sky, although for this we had to tinker with the settings. Of course, not all shots were of high quality, but you can still take some good photos.

Performance and battery life

Most of the characteristics of the W700 speak for good tablet performance. Acer has 4GB of RAM, a 128GB Toshiba hard drive, a Core i5-3317U processor with integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics. The same processor can be found on many new ultrabook models. But, despite similar characteristics to competitors, the Acer Iconia W700 still loses a little to ultrabooks when tested by PCMark 7. The W700 boots up in 12 seconds and this is an average indicator among other Windows 8 devices. And the read and write speeds (542 MB / s and 534 MB / s, respectively) calculated by the Disk Benchmark utility were so high that only an Acer Aspire S7 with a dual SSD in a RAID 0 configuration could overtake it. In addition, thanks to two ventilation holes in the case, the tablet practically does not heat up.

The weak point of the W700 can be considered graphics performance, which, by the way, has never been a strong point of laptops or tablets. 3DMark06 scored a performance score of 3548, well below other Windows 8 devices. Even if the tablet's resolution is reduced as much as possible, its graphics performance remains at a very weak level, on par with the Aspire S7 and Dell XPS 12.

It's worth noting that the W700 has the same processor and touchscreen as most of the Windows 8 devices we've tested. But, despite this, the battery of the tablet with three cells and 4850 mAh lasted an hour longer than other Windows 8 touch devices. To be more precise, the Iconia W700 worked without recharging for 7 hours and 13 minutes. And all this time we were cyclically playing a video file from a local disk via Wi-Fi with a screen brightness of 65%. For reference, the second place in terms of battery life took from 5.5 hours. That being said, the Yoga 13's chassis clearly allows for a much larger and more powerful battery than the W700's. And some other Windows 8 tablets didn't even last four hours.

The Acer Iconia W700 looks even better compared to lighter ARM-battery tablets. You might say that such a comparison would be completely unfair, but, in fact, the difference in the batteries of these tablets is not that big. Especially if you take into account the tablets, which have much lower performance. But the W700 will only benefit from such a comparison, because even the ASUS Transformer Pad TF300 worked for only an hour more, and even for 10 minutes. Of course, we admit that the Nexus 10 itself has a very short battery life, but we don't know of any other tablet with a Core i5 processor that can come close to it. Usually high performance and touch screen will significantly reduce battery life. Take for example with its 4 hours of operation, and the related W700, which has the same characteristics, but can last up to 7.5 hours! And it's really incredible for such a powerful tablet with high performance.

Software

We think having two clouds of live titles is a bad omen for a tablet. Why do manufacturers demonstrate all possible programs and add-ons of the device, if it would be possible to get by with a simple and concise menu, with the ability to configure and adjust it. On a tablet, you can find apps like Amazon.com; Kindle reader; Netflix; iCookBook; Hulu Plus; streaming music service 7digital; Evernote; eBay; Skitch; ChaCha; StumbleUpon; Internet radio station TuneIn; skype; Acer's CrystalEye webcam applications; Spotify; newsXpresso; and a trial version of McAfee Internet Suite. In addition, the W700 has several built-in games, including Zeptolab, The Treasures of Montezuma 3 and Shark Dash. And AcerCloud will allow you to copy and store information received when using IOS or Abdroid applications. There is also an Acer Explorer utility designed to display a list of all installed applications on the tablet.

Configuration Options and Warranty

Acer Iconia W700 will be sold in several variants. At $24,000, you get 1.8GHz, a Core i3 processor, and 64GB of hard drive space, but you still get the same high-quality 1080p screen. For 27,000 rubles, the tablet will already be equipped with a Core i5 processor with the same 64 GB of memory. Having paid another 3,000 rubles, the tablet's memory will increase to 128 GB. But at a cost of about 35,000 rubles, you will get a Core i5, 128 GB of memory and licensed Windows 8 with a two-year warranty.

Whichever choice you make, the package will still include a mobile stand and a Bluetooth keyboard. While most companies, including Samsung and Microsoft, continue to sell the keyboard separately, regardless of the configuration of the tablets. Thus, Acer hopes to be a strong competitor in the AV equipment market.

Comparison

The Acer Iconia W700 is a truly amazing tablet/laptop hybrid. It has enough power to equal ultrabooks, yet it's portable and tiny like all other tablets. Plus, its battery life is truly amazing. But, it seems to us that a few illustrative examples are needed to sum up.

Let's compare the W700 to the Surface Pro, which isn't yet on sale but is already rocking the AV market. The Surface Pro will start at $24,000 for the 64GB model. However, its Touch Cover keyboard will be sold separately. As with , we expect this keyboard to be fairly stable and comfortable to type on. In addition, the Surface Pro's keyboard is smaller than the W700's and supports pen input that's not available on an Acer tablet. However, the Surface Pro falls short of the W700 in terms of battery life.

The ASUS TAICHI Dual Screen 1080p Ultrabook is also a tidbit for all laptop lovers, but it's out of retail right now. We have already managed to get one of these devices for testing and we can safely say that ASUS TAICHI will become a strong competitor for the W700.

One of the best options that you can already find on store shelves is the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro, better known as the Series 7 Slate. Priced at around Rs. It differs from the W700 only in pen input or finger control and has the same S Pen app that you could find on the Galaxy Note 10.1. In addition, the Series 7 Slate features a keyboard dock with a touchpad that can replace a mouse or any other pointing device.

Suppose that from time to time you need to use your personal computer in mobile tablet mode. Why not then create a touch ultrabook that can be used as a tablet if necessary? Something similar and offers Dell XPS 12, costing from 36,000 rubles. The Dell XPS 12 is slightly larger than the Acer Iconia W700, yet has a great 1080p screen and a very comfortable detachable keyboard that can turn a tablet into a full-fledged ultrabook. Due to the fact that manufacturers strive to minimize their devices as much as possible, the size of the keyboard also becomes dependent on the diagonal of the tablet screen. And this means that even when buying a heavy-duty and expensive device, you will have to reckon with a small and cramped keyboard, which often turns the typing process into real torture. And there are hardly many people who want the display to also show all user actions on the outside of the tablet. Therefore, the W700 is again in the lead.

You can also take the Toshiba Satellite U925t for comparison, which, among other problems, has a disgusting build quality, a loud cooler and a short battery life. Sony VAIO Duo 11 also suffered from similar problems. From this we can conclude that the Acer Iconia W700 looks very advantageous against the backdrop of all the latest innovations.

Conclusion

At first glance, we didn't really like the Acer Iconia W700. It is too thick and heavy, and the massive sloppy stand further spoils the appearance of the device. But, if you discard all aesthetic preferences and look inside, you will be pleasantly surprised. A powerful Core i5 processor, an amazingly long battery life, and an excellent 1080p high-quality screen combine to create a very attractive picture. We did not expect such capabilities from a regular tablet at all. The W700 is more like an ultrabook because no i5-powered tablet can last seven hours on battery at the moment.

Do not forget about the pleasant cost of the device. The starting price of the W700 is about 24,000 rubles. At the same time, the package includes a wireless keyboard, a stand and a case. Compared to the Surface Pro, which costs $3,000 more for the same specs with an i5 and a 64GB hard drive, the W700 clearly wins with its keyboard. Perhaps this keyboard is far from ideal, but the fact that it is already included in the price will disproportionately please buyers. Microsoft should learn from Acer pricing.

However, the problem with the massive design of the tablet and stand remains relevant. A docking station with a built-in keyboard and battery would have been more appropriate and organic. In order to use the Acer Iconia W700 as a laptop, you will need to carry up to seven different accessories with you, which take up a lot of space in your bags, and this is a significant minus. If you opt for the W700, then we would recommend that you use the tablet case as a stand. In this case, you will lose three additional USB 3.0 ports, but save a lot of space in your bag. In the future, we hope to see an organic docking station that will greatly simplify the process of working with the tablet and make it a very strong competitor.

The Acer Iconia W700 is a very powerful quality tablet PC with an excellent screen. The W700 has a clunky design and lots of detachable components, but the low price makes up for that inconvenience.

Equipped with full Windows 8, the Acer Iconia Tab W700 tablet first appeared on the market in the summer of 2012 and remains popular today, thanks to its quality and price. The powerful Intel Core i5 processor and 11-inch screen make the Acer W700 tablets comparable to compact computers.

Design

Acer Iconia Tab W700 - tablet-transformer

Acer knows how to make solid tablets.

Iconia Tab W700 in an aluminum case (against plastic counterparts from other manufacturers) with a large screen protected by a special glass looks like a business-class tablet. Build quality is excellent, as always. The rubber gasket between the case and the screen glass prevents dust from entering the internal parts.

Acer Iconia Tab W700 is quite thick and heavy, its weight is 950 g. Holding it in one hand will not work for long. But these shortcomings can be forgiven, given that the tablet is stuffed with a powerful processor and a battery from a full-fledged laptop.

Two fan openings are a tribute to aesthetics. There is only one fan in the tablet, and it is very noisy. The active cooling system creates some annoying interference, turning on even during reading.

Additional equipment

Acer Iconia Tab W700 is a convertible tablet. With it, the manufacturer supplies a docking station with a built-in USB 3.0 port, which only works when the dock is connected to the network. It comes with a wireless keyboard that connects to the tablet via Bluetooth.

The plastic dock serves as a stand for the tablet. Admittedly, Acer did not spend too much on the dock. Its appearance creates a contrast with an expensive and solid tablet. The dock can be used in landscape and portrait orientations without changing the angle.

Keyboard Acer Iconia Tab W700 deserves praise. It looks stylish and is quite comfortable to use. Standard-sized buttons are rare on tablets. As an alternative, the manufacturer offers a transformer complete with a case and a built-in keyboard.

Software

Windows 8 is the hit of the season. Full-fledged computer software on mobile devices amazed consumers, but the first version managed to provoke protests and discontent.

Acer Iconia Tab W700 initially comes with Windows 8, but the system itself offers to upgrade it to Windows 8.1. The tablet starts to slow down after the update. Updating the drivers available on the developer's website fixes the "glitches" of the system.

Windows 8.1 isn't called "full" for nothing. It is identical to the versions for PC and laptops. Interestingly, Windows 8 was originally designed for touchscreen devices. Windows 8 tablets are faster and more convenient than devices with other operating systems.

The Windows Store still offers few interesting applications, and many games and programs for mobile devices are not adapted for Windows 8. But given that the tablet is equipped with a full version of Windows, you can install all the usual computer applications. However, most of them cannot be used without a mouse.

Performance

The software developer has provided the ability to evaluate the performance of Windows 8 itself. The built-in performance index version 8.1 stores the results in a system file.

Windows 8 gave the Acer Iconia Tab W700 a score of 4.9. When the object of consideration is a transformer tablet, it can be considered a good result. The GPU is Acer's weak link.

The tablet showed an excellent result in network performance - 55 Mbps. Games from the store on the Acer W700 run and run smoothly. And yet tablets are not yet adapted for demanding games. Here, any mobile device, even on Windows 8, is inferior to a computer and laptop.

The tablet-transformer plays most popular video formats. An HDMI port allows you to connect Acer tablets to a large screen or use them for conferences.

autonomy

Acer Iconia Tab W700 showed a decent result in battery life. The tablet is equipped with a 4850 mAh battery. This is enough for the transformer to play video for 7.5 hours at maximum brightness. In reading mode, the tablet showed 11 hours. Playing on Acer will be at best three hours. I was pleased with the charger from a full-fledged laptop. Thanks to him, the tablet charges very quickly.

Outcome

Increasing the mobility of computers has been a major concern for manufacturers since the introduction of the first PC. Tablets have replaced laptops, just as the latter replaced desktop computers. Windows 8 tablets have become a new stage in the history of the development of computer technology. It is obvious that manufacturers are striving to create a mobile device that will not be inferior to its older brothers in performance and power.

Acer Iconia Tab W700 is a representative of this concept. A tablet equipped with an Intel Core processor claims to be a desktop computer. Not to mention installing Windows 8 and updating it to version 8.1.

Compromises due to the use of powerful hardware stuffing slightly spoil the overall impression of the device. An active cooling system, a single USB 3.0 modification port are all trifles, but they are sometimes annoying. Thanks to Acer for installing a powerful battery for which they did not pursue a weight advantage.

Excellent IPS screen with Full-HD resolution is a real pleasure. The performance for a tablet is sufficient, you can’t call it gaming, but it’s enough for everyday needs and not too demanding games.

Windows tablets are the most versatile. They are suitable for office and home use, suitable for work and leisure. Full apps and games are more than you would expect from a mobile device.

Of course, the thickness of the body could be less, but the Acer Iconia W700 can still beat the competition in its segment. Acer plans to release an updated version on a more powerful Intel Haswell processor, perhaps it will eliminate minor flaws.

Tablet equipped with an Intel Core processor - Acer Iconia Tab W700

A more advanced configuration of the Acer W701 with a built-in 3G module is available on the market. Both models, W700 and W701, are available in variations:

  • Intel Core i3, 64 GB;
  • Intel Core i3, 64 GB, keyboard dock;
  • Intel Core i5, 128 GB, keyboard dock.

The main competitors of Acer Iconia W700 are Microsoft Surface and Samsung ATIV Pro. Acer wins significantly in price. Looking forward to the version with the Haswell processor.

Advantages:

  • IPS Full-HD screen;
  • excellent performance;
  • fast processor;
  • a full-fledged operating system with support for standard computer applications;
  • great design and build;
  • support for PC games;
  • the presence of micro-HDMI and USB 3.0.

Flaws:

  • dimensions, large weight and thickness;
  • poor quality rear camera;
  • noise of the cooling system.

Against the background of the advantages of the Iconia Tab W700, its disadvantages look ridiculous. Acer, as always, has released a quality gadget for adults and demanding users.

The tablet came to us in a huge dense light gray package, the dimensions of which (440x235x125 mm) would be the envy of many shoeboxes from under boots. But before I tell you what is included in the complete kit, it is necessary to explain what options and specifications are generally available.

The most affordable version of the Acer Iconia Tab W700 will cost 25,000 rubles. For this money, you get a tablet with an Intel Core i3 processor and a 64 GB SSD drive, and you get a case as a gift. A complete set of a tablet on a Core i3 + 64 GB SSD will cost 28,000 rubles, and for 35,000 a “tablet” version on a Core i5 + 128 GB SSD and a complete set are available.

Full set includes:

  • Tablet
  • Mains charger
  • HDMI to VGA adapter
  • Docking station with stand
  • Bluetooth keyboard
  • Case
  • Several DVDs (!?) for system recovery

Each item is neatly stowed in cardboard compartments. However, after unpacking the whole box, I could not find a place for the leg from the docking station, since it has a curved shape and therefore practically does not fit anywhere easily. Memories surfaced: as a child, I dismantled the telescope, but again I could not assemble it correctly. I think everyone has had such situations :)

Positioning

After the release of the eighth version of Microsoft Windows, almost all companies related to the production of tablets and laptops rushed to release their devices on this operating system. It seems to me that this is an absolutely right step, since there are more and more gadgets with touch screens: laptops are gradually being replaced by ultrabooks, and those, in turn, by tablets, on which "Win8" looks more logical than on desktops and non-touch "notebooks". Using Windows on tablets has become much more comfortable, since you definitely won’t miss the huge and bright tiles, and to close the application, now you don’t have to be a sniper, getting into a tiny cross.

Unfortunately, it is still difficult to determine the audience that will benefit from a tablet computer: tablets on Android or iOS are suitable for home use - they have less weight, dimensions, they practically do not heat up and do not make noise. You won't be able to play on the "Win-tablet" either - so far the fillings are very weak. In the office, as a rule, there are desktop computers. As an option, use a tablet on Windows 8 in field conditions to perform specific tasks. Or, for example, for students who do not need to frequently edit documents, but it is desirable to have applications such as AutoCAD, MathCAD and other peculiar programs that are compatible only with Microsoft's OS. However, the question arises of the cost of such "pills". Students need cheap and cheerful, and for the majority of students in universities, 25-35 thousand rubles is a lot of money.

In general, I think that at present the positioning of such gadgets is somewhat blurry.

Design, dimensions, controls

Network adapter. It consists of a cable with a plug (length - 100 mm, diameter - 6.5 mm) and an adapter itself (dimensions 88x65x21 mm) with a one and a half meter cable (diameter 3.5 mm) for connecting to the device. Input - 100-240 V, 1.6 A, output - 19 V, 3.42 A. Model: PA-1650-80.

Keyboard. Made from silver painted plastic. Dimensions - 286x130x7 mm (in the thickest place - 16 mm). There are 66 keys in total. Made of white plastic. The size of each is 9x9x2 mm. Spaced apart at a distance of 3 mm. They have a clear pressure and a small move. Together with batteries, the device weighs about 400 grams.

On the top of the front panel there are two indicators: battery charge and operation. A little to the right is a mechanical on/off switch. On the back side there are four rubberized black feet, a “Connect” button (used to reconnect the keyboard) and a compartment for two AAA batteries.

The function buttons F1, F2, F3 ..., F12 are called by the combinations FN + Q, FN + W, FN + E ..., FN + "]".

Dock station. It is a plastic box with dimensions of 300x270x30 mm. The model is called V1JV1. The inside and back are white, the front side is silver. On the left inside are special connectors for power and USB. Additionally, there are three USB ports. Below are two cutouts for speakers. The tablet is inserted from right to left until it locks into place. For a stable position of the docking station on a horizontal surface, you need to insert a plastic leg from the back.

Tablet. Frankly, I did not expect that Acer could make such a cool and stylish case for an ordinary tablet. It is made almost entirely of unpainted aluminum with a slightly rough matte surface. Feelings are very pleasant. The usual shape is a rectangle with slightly rounded edges. On the back side there is a milky plastic insert. Behind it, apparently, are the antennas of the wireless interfaces.

Since the case design is monolithic (“unibody”), there are no complaints about the assembly: nothing backlash, does not creak, and does not crunch even with strong twisting. Within a month of using the W700, only a few shallow scratches appeared on its surface. The screen is protected by durable glass (according to some information - Gorilla Glass 2). By the way, a thin rubberized black strip runs along the edge of the display. As far as I understand, it has two important functions: the first - since it rises slightly, it protects the front side from damage; the second is shock-absorbing properties, i.e. when hitting the body, it reduces the impact of the contact of metal and glass. Fingerprints remain on the screen and are erased with great difficulty, and due to the fact that the surface is mirrored, traces are very noticeable.

Dimensions tablet Acer Iconia Tab W700 - 295 × 192 × 12 mm, and weight 940 grams. That is, you need to understand that the device is not small and not at all light, you just can’t read books or documents in the subway, after 10-15 minutes your hand gets tired. You can’t call the W700 a bedside either: personally, it’s more convenient for me to use a 650 g “tablet” from Apple or some even lighter plastic Samsung in a similar situation.

On the front panel there is a peephole of the front camera and a small indicator of its operation, at the bottom there is a mechanical button (dimensions 20x6x1mm) "Start". It is quite tight, so you have to press hard. Designed to return to the start screen or launch the previous application.

On the bottom side there are two speakers hidden under six holes on each side and covered with a red metal grille. In the center is a hardware reset button for the device.

Standard 3.5mm headphone jack, volume rocker and power button with LED. They rise a little above the body, are easily groped with fingers, the stroke is small.

On the upper side there are two grilles for the removal of warm air (active cooling system) and a non-fixed (moved to the side and returned to its original position) mechanical screen orientation blocker.

The power socket, full-sized USB port, microHDMI and the second microphone are on the left side.

On the back side, on the left, there is a camera eye and a small LED signaling its operation.

In general, Acer W700 has a very nice ergonomic design, presentable appearance and cool body materials.

Display

Diagonal display tablet Acer Iconia Tab W700 is 11.6 inches. Its physical size is 256x144 mm, the aspect ratio is 16x9, the resolution is quite high for such a diagonal - 1920x1080 pixels, while the density is 189 pixels per inch. It uses a high-quality CineCrystal IPS-matrix. The sensitivity and accuracy of the calibration is at a high level, the touch layer works out up to 10 simultaneous touches.

The viewing angles are maximum, the picture is not distorted at all, the brightness remains almost unchanged even under significant screen tilts. Brightness can be adjusted over a wide range: approximately 30 cd/m2 to 340 cd/m2. Naturally, there is a light sensor that adjusts the brightness quite smoothly and quickly. The contrast ratio is approximately 950:1.

All screen settings are familiar to Windows.

Battery

The tablet has a 3-section lithium-polymer (Li-Pol) battery with a capacity of 4850 mAh. Maximum power supply - 65 watts. The developer does not provide any data on autonomy. I used the tablet in various modes with different screen brightness. On average, the tablet “lived” for about 10 hours: the brightness was 50%, mail and twitter synchronization was on, every hour I browsed sites for 20-30 minutes, used the menu, launched office documents. In Internet surfing mode, the device worked for about 8 hours - this is about 40% of the screen brightness, and all synchronization is turned on. If you want to watch a movie (HD 720p, sound output to headphones), then count on 5 hours at maximum brightness and about two hours if you “hack” into not the most resource-intensive toys. However, I tested the W700 on Need For Speed Most Wanted. With NFS "battery" sat down after 1.5 hours (maximum brightness, sound output to speakers).

The most interesting thing is that the W700 lay in the "sleep" mode for about two weeks and did not discharge by one percent.

I can’t say that the figures are amazing, but almost all Android tablets often have less battery life. I would compare the autonomy of the Acer Iconia Tab W700 with the Apple iPad 4, of course, if you do not “strain” the first one by 100%.

Communication options

The device is equipped with Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4 / 5 GHz) and Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technologies. Both controllers operate on a Qualcomm Atheros chip (AR5BMD222) with a PCIe x1 interface.

During testing, no failures were observed: the Internet via Wi-Fi steadily “reached” the tablet, and the Bluetooth keyboard functioned without problems.

Memory

Unfortunately, the Acer W700 was not equipped with a card reader, and there is only one USB input. Those. by connecting a “flash drive” to a USB, you will have to wait with the rest of the devices.

The drive is a high-speed 128 GB SSD drive from Toshiba. The model is called THNSNS128GMCP. It uses 24nm flash memory, SATA-III 6Gb/s interface, power consumption is 3.9W. Brief technical characteristics:

  • Maximum read speed: just over 400MB/s
  • Maximum write speed: just over 230MB/s

RAM in the device 4 GB (dual-channel DDR3 SDRAM, 1333 MHz).

Camera

The device was equipped with two camera modules: the main one with 5 MP, the front one with 0.9 MP. The maximum photo resolution is 2592x1944 pixels, video is 1920x1080 pixels at 10 frames per second.

The photo quality is mediocre, comparable to budget phones. There is auto focus and manual focus. The minimum distance to the object is 30 mm. Video W700 writes no better: it greatly increases, the number of frames is only 10, the sound is gurgling and like from a barrel.

But I liked the front camera. For communication in Skype is quite suitable.

The performance index gives the device 5.4 points, the minimum value, which is natural, is gained by the graphics accelerator. The processor is rated at 6.9 points, the memory is 5.9, the graphics in games are 6.3, and the hard drive is 8.1.

CPU-Z Data

The usual integrated graphics of the Ivy Bridge processor line - Intel HD Graphics 4000 - also acts as a graphics accelerator. Compared to Intel HD Graphics 3000, HD4000 has been redesigned and offers DirectX 11 capabilities. Theoretically, it can show performance 60% higher than HD3000.

I think that neither the processor nor the video card really needs a wide introduction. For those who are interested, the following data: the game Mass Effect 3 (low quality) at a resolution of 1366x768 produces 23 - 33 frames per second, Dirt 3 (low quality) - 22 - 28 frames per second, Deus EX HR - 19 - 31 fps , Battlefield 3 - about 25 fps. In general, you can play, in principle, but at the minimum settings and at low resolution.

When decoding FullHD video, there are no problems: the videos are played smoothly without the slightest lag.

As for the noise, frankly speaking, even on the heaviest applications, the coolers did not overclock so much that they could be heard. Well, a warm breeze - yes, it came out.

Software platform

The Acer Iconia Tab W700 tablet runs on the Microsoft Windows 8 64-bit operating system. I will not express my impression of the OS, since this is a purely subjective opinion. In general, cute and nimble, but not always intuitive and logical.

An additional interesting feature was the proprietary original graphic design for viewing photos, videos, documents and managing wireless interfaces. In order to launch this interface, you need to touch the screen with all fingers of one hand.

I would rate the volume of the built-in speakers at 4 out of 5: you can hear well at a distance of two meters, you don’t have to strain your hearing. The quality is adequate, considering that we have a tablet in front of us.

Conclusion

Ordinary bulky laptops are gradually being replaced by lightweight ultrabooks with the same filling, and over time they will be replaced by even lighter tablets. I love the current trend of making mobile devices easier to use, and the use of touch screens has played a big part in that. However, the tipping point has now come where we already have powerful tablet computers, but they are still relatively large for comfortable use in all situations. Therefore, I believe that it is difficult to attribute such devices to any class and clearly define the circle of consumers.

The Acer Iconia Tab W700 gadget was liked, first of all, by its appearance, case materials and high-quality screen. There are probably no negative points. If you think otherwise, please unsubscribe in the comments, I will read it with pleasure.
